Pietrasanta, the city of marble sculptors and workshops, has officially launched its candidacy to become the Italian Capital of Contemporary Art (Capitale italiana dell’arte contemporanea) for 2027. The city aims to leverage its rich history of sculpture and artistic tradition to win the prestigious title, which comes with a €1 million state grant to fund a year of exhibitions, installations, and other cultural activities.
Pietrasanta’s bid focuses on showcasing its role as a traditional center for artistic trades, urban regeneration, and also shaping a sustainable model for the future of art and culture in the city. The city hopes to use the opportunity to attract new talents, and foster a vibrant cultural scene that extends beyond 2027. The title of its bid is Being Art. Or of the humanity of art.
The Italian Capital of Contemporary Art is an initiative of the country’s Ministry of Culture (MIC) to promote creativity, cultural production, and social inclusion through innovative art projects.
Pietrasanta (Lucca) aims to bring the title to Tuscany after Carrara’s attempt last year, which reached the finals.
All in all, six accepted project proposals were submitted by eight Italian municipalities.
A jury of five renowned experts, appointed by the MIC, will evaluate the projects and select the finalists by September 15, 2025. They will then be summoned by mid-October to a public hearing, during which they will have the opportunity to present their dossiers in extended and interactive form. The proclamation of the Italian Capital of Contemporary Art 2027 is expected by October 30, 2025.
